BENEFITS OF METAL ROOFS

While American Log Brokers does not sell metal roofs, we do recommend them for a number of reasons.

Per State Farm, reasons for completing your home with a metal roof are as follows:

  • Longevity: They can last 40-70 years, depending on the metal material.

  • Durability: Some metal roofs can sustain wind gusts up to 140 miles per hour.

  • Safety: They will not spark/ignite into flames during a wildfire or lightning strike.

On the Classic Metal Roofs web site, authored by Mike Gonet, he states: “Asphalt shingles are often used on homes, but begin to break down due to the elements as soon as they are installed on the roof. They are exposed to the summer sun and winter conditions … Aluminum (metal) roofs are by far the best choice for longevity, energy efficiency, the environment, sustainability, and beauty. Most of the aluminum roofing today is made from recycled aluminum.”

If you will be building in an area that receives a lot of snow: An article in Roofing Contractor (William A. Lotz P.E., 2009) states: “Metal roofing systems have a good track record of performance in harsh winter environments, as long as they are properly designed. The key factors are usually snow loading requirements, adequate slope, and the use of snow guards when needed. If these issues are addressed during the design stage and the roofing contractor does his job, these systems will almost always perform as intended.”

Per Englert, a metal roofing company, their most popular colors are:

  • Charcoal Grey

  • Forest Green

  • Dark Bronze

  • Hartford Green

  • Matte Black

Per Roof Calculator, other popular colors include:

  • Beige

  • Bronze

  • Sand

  • Light blue

  • Deep red

Reasons to choose certain colors: Lighter colors reflect the sun’s rays a lot better than darker ones, thus keeping your home cooler in the summer.

Underlayment on the Roof

Always put 30 pound (30#) felt on the roof prior to nailing the metal.

For more than 25 years, organizations such as the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) have included roofing felt in their roofing and waterproofing recommendations.  It is also a requirement under many building codes for the following reasons:

  1. It repels water

  2. It provides extra weather protection

  3. It prevents wood resins stains

  4. It improves look and uniformity

A metal roof may cost more in the beginning, but it is worth it in the end!
